Going Against The Grain With Najee Janey
Hailing from Boston, rapper/singer/songwriter Najee Janey, a three-time Boston Music Award nominee for Best R&B and Unsigned Artist of the Year who has also published songs for HBO’s sitcom RAPSH!T and Tyler Perry’s SISTAS, continues to trailblaze a new music genre of “hip hop soul” with the release of his long awaited project – “Break Free”. We sit down with Najee Janey to get to know him a little better.
Tell us about your new EP?
I like to call BREAK FREE, "The Grand Appetizer," because that’s simply what it is. Every song has a distinct and unique sound that serves its own purpose by introducing strokes of production, you normally wouldn’t hear together on a project of mine. Yet, with this project I’m breaking free from all preconceived notions of what a Najee Janey project should sound like. And for the listener, I wanted BREAK FREE to be their alarm clark that reminds them to never be afraid of thinking outside of the box, or listening and following the vision that they’ve placed for themselves to follow. Shout out to the members of my production team that produced on the EP, Tony Royal, Gengis Don, Gib DJ, West Munroe, and Brandon Young.
What was the inspiration behind it?
My team and I wanted to create a sound that aligned with the growth that I am experiencing musically, spiritually physically, and emotionally. I wanted to show the many layers of my artistry at a high level in a way that I haven’t done before. When the idea came up to make Break Free a place (really a state of mind) that I am transporting the listener to, the project really began to come together.
How was positive thinking helped you?
I’ve always followed the mantra of “keep a positive thought because a positive thought can’t be denied”. One thing I’ve learned in life is that the more positive my thoughts are, the more things tend to go in my favor, versus harboring on negative thoughts making me feel like I’m going against the grain.
What can we expect next?
More music, more content, more life, more love. I’m looking forward to more opportunities to share my music with the world, and attract more song writing opportunities.
What stimulates your soul?
Music, nature, love, knowledge, growth and truth.
