Soul searching with Birmingham singer Monique

Birmingham soul singer Monique optimises true soul, her infectious raspy tones complimented with her truthful storytelling elevates listeners to an unforgettable journey.

Having just released ‘The Gift,’ Monique returns with a vulnerable track filled with joy, reality and the ultimate gift - life. We chat to Monique about her latest release, what it’s like to be back after 2 years out of the game, and the effects of motherhood. Margaret Tra writes.

Your song 'The Gift' highlights your experience with pregnancy, was it important to you to create a song about a pivotal experience in your life?

Whenever I write I often capture the experiences and moments that have impacted me the most. In that sense I guess writing about my journey towards becoming a mother was inevitable. It has and will always be one of the greatest pivots I'll ever experience.

Your last tour was 2013, what's it like to be back?

It feels good! It's taken a lot of soul searching to get to this point so it's a huge achievement.

What is next for you musically wise?

More songwriting, live shows and touring towards the end of the year. I'm looking forward to working with different producers and having new material ready for 2016.

Has motherhood changed the way you'll create music?

It's early days but I'm almost certain it will. We'll have to wait and see!

Tell us about your EP, and what we can expect?

The EP is a raw presentation of stories that explore the concept of time and moments. Song titles such as 'Forever With You' and 'Nothing's Certain But The Past,' tie this theme of time together. Creatively, it's a reflection of where I am in this moment and is a statement of my personal journey to self acceptance. Expect heartfelt melodies with strong messages and declarations.

What stimulates your soul?

Authentic artistry.
