Getting to know Sydney's DJ Lou Lou Ahead of SYS Sounds July Event
How did you first start DJing?
The older brother of my friend was a DJ in a band and he was an amazing turntablist. So I started to mess about with his turntables when I was 17 and when I turned 18 I sold a surfboard and a guitar and bought my first set of turntables and a DJ mixer. Although I only had about 20 records, I'd practice beat matching and scratching and mixing and mashing acapellas over instrumentals. I moved to Sydney when I was 18 and started to spend all my money at Next Level Records and The Record Store and started going out and seeing lots of DJs play and got inspired! I listened/got inspired from DJs like Z-Trip, Qbert, The Nextmen, Andy Smith, DJ Zinc & Mix Master Mike.
Top 5 hip hop songs
Jurassic 5 -Thin Line Feat. Nelly Furtado
A sweet hip hop song that gives you the feels. J5 is one of the first hip hop groups that I got into way back in high school. And this was the first song ever that I successfully beat matched.
The Roots - Rolling with heat Feat. Talib Kweli
It's all about the drums in this song! Black Thought & Talib Kweli absolutely kill it also!
Leikeli47 - Money
This chick is great! This song is funky. It goes down a treat on any dancefloor. The finger snaps, the rhymes, the bassline, everything. It's a perfect song.
J -Cole - Who dat
This is the 1st J cole song that I ever heard, and still my favourite. The raps are so slick and clever. The beat is banging, especially the horns. Also, the film clip is amazing, it's a one shot style clip and has all the things a good rap video should have such as exploding cars and hot dancers.
Big Boi - Shutterbag Feat. Cutty
I cannot sit still whenever I hear this song. Amazing, funky production especially the vocoder. Big Boi raps are punchy and effortlessly cool. Also a rad film clip.
