Undertow Shows Us How It's Done With New 'On Sight' EP
Fresh off the release of his single ‘On Sight,’ Undertow returns to release his highly anticipated EP with the same title.
Back with a vengeance and different to his other releases, Undertow strays away from his signature boom bap rap style to diversify his skills into combining his bass music history of Dtechmc (DnB/Grime/Dubstep/Breakbeats) further showcasing the rapper’s versatility.
The 4-track EP see’s the skilful rapper get playful with his tracks, circling around with higher energy music with BPMs upwards to 140. Whilst his single ‘On Sight’ created a vibe that’s familiar and central, the track ‘Who’ dabbles into early grime sound circa early 2000s.
“This album is just me having a flex on a different bpm. I have a major history with this music, I was hosting Garage sets back in 2001 so it’s nothing new. It’s the first time that the Undertow name has been associated to this as when I was coming up in Hip hop in Australia, the garage/grime scene was a very different one to that of the hip hop,”
"I remember a review I got on my first album from Beat Magazine in Melbourne which stated, I didn’t know what to think about this album as it was from a club Mc. So yeah it took me a while to combine both of these personas into one so to speak,”
His drive, passion for music and talent has led him onto the radar of local and international media taste-makers.
Stylistically Undertow’s broad versatility is refreshing and genuine as he lyrically dips into real life dilemmas with local references and witty punchlines, making him intriguing and accessible whilst providing a relatable figure to the flourishing music scene and beyond.
Having made a bold and confident statement within his career, Undertow is no stranger to the stage. He has over 20 years tenure entertaining Australian and New Zealand audiences never swaying too far from the spotlight. Since releasing his debut LP ‘Minds Believing’ in 2010 to some great reviews and recognition. He then went on to release two albums and an EP with the act Kobra Kai. As a founding member the D&B/Grime/Hip Hop/Electronica act Kobra Kai made a huge impact on the Australian scene. Following that release, ’Light in the Distance’ dropped 2018 and a collaboration with Sydney producer O.T and Dj Maniak for 2019’s ‘Staircases’ release.
Undertow has gone on to perfect his craft of connecting metaphors and syllables over crafted instrumentals. Along the way he shared the stage with some of the best in the business, including Caspa, Dizzee Rascal, Scratch Perverts, Ocean Wisdom, Sigma, DJ Fresh, Q-Bert, The Four Owls, Jam Baxter, MIA, Footsie and more.
