We sit down with the rapper to discuss how he’s handled being a musician during this pandemic and more.

You directed your latest video, tell us about it?

Yeah, so basically wanted something simple for the visual, I’m not a big fan of over the top, more simplicity or edgy. For “Ryu” I got one my home girls from the area to pull up mow my lawns and clean my knives. Creating a nonchalant vibe around my sound.

What have you got planned for the year now?

I’m dropping a few mixtapes, I got a new music video for a song called “Last December” dropping on the 15th of this month as a starter track from my new mixtape “iLoveSadGirls” which doesn’t have a release date yet. “Last December” is a post rock song about deep alienation facing depression and loneliness from a toxic relationship. The music video was actually fun too make, I grabbed some rope and some dolls .. the rest you have to see. January 15th.

You've got audiences in different countries, how did you manage that?

You know the saying, “find your tribe”? Basically being me around my city didn’t allow me to grow really I had to think out side the box .. I have Australians, Americans, people from Brazil, Lithuania Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and many more from Russia. I utilised Instagram and I guess my aesthetic pulled them in. Through mental health awareness, connecting with others who felt alone in this world I managed to grow a little cult like following. My song “Sailor Moon” actually helped a lot too with almost 100k streams.

What would you say would be the way to get fans/listeners?

I can’t express this enough, ‘genuine’. Be genuine. Transparent and honest about your goals, most importantly. Make good music that your niche can relate too and make sure to keep that consistent.

How have you stayed sane through a pandemic?

I don’t like people. I’m a loner by choice. In fact I love empty highways and desolate places. If it’s not my 256 I don’t care. The only crowd I crave is the ones who’ve come to see my shows. So these restrictions don’t effect me, I work from home since I’ve turned one of my bedrooms into a studio. But I hope for those who find it hard to cope to stay strong during these times.
