Canadian-based Nigerian singer, songwriter and poet BUWA is not resting on his laurels in 2020, as he kickstarts the new year, with the excellent new music video for ‘EMINLO’, one of the standout tracks from his Olu EP.

Produced by frequent collaborator SizzlePRO, ‘Eminlo’ is a sultry jazz soul offering with superb R&B sensibilities, underpinned by lush saxophone arrangements, minimalist drum patterns, pining harmonies, and Buwa’s undeniable vocal performance, which sees Buwa opening up about a hard relationship that he was in, which was very difficult to come out of, hence the Yoruba song title, which translates to “I’m leaving” in English.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Eminlo’, Buwa says, “this track talks about having the strength to finally leave an abusive and toxic relationship. You know it is very hard but you still can't find the strength to leave”. For the visuals, Buwa has collaborated with Vancouver filmmaker Raymond Knight to capture “the personal struggle and anguish it can often take to get out of a toxic relationship, even when you know it’s the best thing for you”.

Counting Whitney Houston, Jill Scott, India Arie, Billy Porter, and Brenda Fassie, as his biggest inspirations, Buwa is an exciting modern soul artist, with pop and R&B sensibilities and a penchant for storytelling, which Buwa also channels into poetry and performance art. Currently starring in a Jesus Christ Superstar theatre piece in Vancouver, Buwa has also just finished leading a stage production of Hairspray and Chicago in Canada.
