ALPHAMAMA Liberates Herself In New EP ‘Oil & Water’
Following the success of her latest single ‘3x11’, ALPHAMAMA returns with her long awaited record ‘Oil & Water’.
Using music as medicine, ’Oil & Water’ is an insightful and honest documentation of self discovery and self acceptance. As an artist who shares her process openly and intimately through social media, her record stands true to her image. Through womb deep wailing, rapid fire raps or poetic whispers, ‘Oil & Water’ emphases the message that no matter which form or shape she embodies, she is enough.
ALPHAMAMA has been an influential player in the RnB/Soul and hip hop scene, collaborating with and supporting some of the industry’s finest from Salt n Pepa, Thundamentals, NGAIIRE and Jessica Mauboy. She has always had a habit of exploding
out of fixed genres and bleeding over a variety of sonic and aesthetic worlds. Her shows are theatrical and edgy.
Coming to the table with a deeper maturity since her last album ‘Truth, Trips and Revelations,’ she is as unapologetic as ever. Effortlessly traversing the realms of Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, Trap and Dance music. As a proud mixed race Australian woman, she features her Indonesian heritage through poetry (Ballers) and gamelan samples (Stranger in Asia).
Of the EP, ALPHAMAMA says, "I love paradox and contradiction... like Oil & Water together create a beauty that’s other-worldly. That’s how I feel about my expression”
“The main thing I want people to know, is that you NEVER ever have to be just one thing. You're a human being with dimension and facets. Soft and strong. Violent and vulnerable. Fierce and feminine. All of it is valid and welcome. I hope that people feel a sense of liberation in their own expression when they hear the record. I try to wear my heart on my social media sleeve and give all my fucks away... This record is no different.”
